Remix Pro Wrestling returns to the Marietta Middle School gym this weekend for "4 Warned-Throwdown for the Pound 4," with wrestling legend Tommy Dreamer and Impact Wrestling's Tag Team women's champion, Tara.
"This is our fourth throwdown since the first event in April 2010," said Adam Johnson, manager of the We Lov Pets shop in Marietta, which sponsors the pro wrestling matches.
Last year Johnson, along with fellow pro wrestling fans Joe Offenberger and Sam Smith, were considering a fundraiser to benefit the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley's animal shelter on Mount Tom Road.
"We all had interests in pro wrestling and over the years each of us had made some contacts in the industry," Johnson explained. "So we put forth our best effort to see how the first event would turn out. It went so well we decided to do it again."
Steve Herron, animal shelter manager, said he didn't know what to expect when the first show was planned.
"The idea seemed to come out of the blue when we first started the throwdowns," he said. "At first I had some doubts but we went with it anyway. I thought if we got a couple thousand dollars out of it that would be OK.
"We made around $5,000 the first time out-people went wild over the event," Herron said. "It was a lot of work but we decided to do another and made more money, and the third event brought even more. Each time they try to make it bigger and better."
He said the latest event in April of this year filled the middle school gym and bleachers.
"We opened the doors at 5 p.m. and there was already a long line of people waiting although the match didn't start till 7," Herron said. "This is a lot more fun than most fundraisers. People get some great entertainment and help the shelter at the same time."
Johnson said people who may not enjoy watching pro wrestling on television often come to the throwdown events and have a great time.
"It's kind of a mix between sports and entertainment," he said. "This is not like any other event. There's comedy, drama and lots of twists and turns. But each show is different-the drama builds a little each time."
Johnson added that for the first time a heavyweight champion will also be crowned during Saturday's event.
"All the proceeds go to the humane society shelter," he said. "I think that's why many people come, because they know this is for a good cause. And we try to keep the event family-friendly."
Herron said the wrestlers are asked not to spit or curse at the event.
"And we try to get the female wrestlers to dress modestly," he said. "We don't want people thinking we would sponsor something that's not wholesome for families.
"This is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for us," Herron said. "It's a lot of work, but thanks to the volunteers and Adam, Joe and Sam it costs the shelter nothing."
